Google Introduces Digital Watermarks for AI-Edited Images

Published February 6, 2025

On Thursday, Google announced an important update regarding the editing of images. Starting this week, the company will implement a digital watermark on images that are edited using its generative AI features. This applies specifically to photos modified using the Reimagine feature in the Magic Editor available on Pixel 9 devices.

The Reimagine feature, which was introduced in 2024, employs generative AI technology to change various elements of digital photos. Unlike traditional editing tools, Reimagine offers users the ability to make more dramatic modifications, making it easier to create images that may look indistinguishable from fully AI-generated visuals.

The rise in lifelike generative AI images has led to growing calls for a standardized method to help people identify whether a photo has been generated or altered by AI. Digital watermarking is being considered as a viable solution, as it can be embedded into an image file without changing the visual quality or content of the image.

To achieve this, Google will use a technology called SynthID, developed by its DeepMind division. SynthID allows a watermark to be embedded directly into AI-generated content without affecting the original image. Additionally, this tool can scan images to detect potential watermarks. Currently, it is in beta and can also be applied to text and video files that utilize AI.

For users who want to check for watermarks, Google has provided a simple way to do so. By clicking on ‘About this Image,’ users can find information in the metadata, which includes details about the digital watermark.

However, Google notes that not all edits will trigger the use of SynthID. There might be instances where slight modifications, such as changing the color of a small object in the background, may not be significant enough for the watermark to be applied or detected.

This new feature is part of Google's broader effort to enhance transparency around AI editing within Google Photos. The company emphasizes that its approach aligns with its established AI principles, which guide its decisions related to artificial intelligence.
