Amazon Schedules Hardware Event Focused on Alexa Updates
Amazon has announced a product event set for February 26 in New York City, where updates regarding the Alexa digital assistant are expected to be disclosed.
An Amazon spokesperson has confirmed that the event will feature insights from the Alexa team. Notably, Panos Panay, Amazon's senior vice president of devices and services, will also attend the event, as indicated in the invitations sent to media outlets.
Racing to Enhance Alexa's Capabilities
In recent times, Amazon has been in a hurry to release a new version of its voice-activated Alexa software, which promises advanced artificial intelligence features. This rush is largely in response to the growing competition in generative AI from other tech giants, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Copilot, along with the AI chatbot Claude developed by Anthropic.
In preparation for the new Alexa's launch, Amazon executives have arranged a critical "Go/No-go" meeting on February 14, as reported by Reuters and sourced from informed individuals.
A Look Back at Alexa's Development
Back in 2023, Amazon first showcased a redesigned version of Alexa, highlighting a live interaction between an executive and the voice assistant as part of an unreleased feature called "Let's Chat." However, since that showcase, Amazon has provided limited updates about the future of Alexa and notably skipped its usual fall product announcement event in 2024.
According to reports from CNBC last year, Amazon has been planning to enhance Alexa with AI functionalities, with discussions of a monthly subscription model to help cover the costs associated with the new technology.
Future CEO Outlook on Alexa
During discussions with investors in October, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy remarked that the revamped Alexa could be on the verge of release, stating the company is working on redefining the foundational models that govern Alexa's capabilities.
Jassy's comments come amid a broader effort to streamline operations at Amazon, which has faced significant layoffs in its devices and services division, including Alexa, since late 2022. Despite Alexa's wide usage—millions of customers utilize Alexa-enabled devices—Amazon has struggled to generate the anticipated revenue from this segment, leading to losses in the tens of billions in its devices business, according to The Wall Street Journal.
