Google Expands AI Overviews in Search to Over 100 Countries
Google is expanding its AI Overviews in Search to over 100 countries and territories, as announced on Monday. This feature provides users with a quick snapshot of relevant information at the top of the search results page.
Initially launched in the United States in May, the AI Overviews have been gradually introduced in various regions worldwide. Google reports that this feature will now reach more than 1 billion users globally each month.
With this rollout, the AI Overviews will be available in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. This diversification aims to make the tool accessible to a broader audience.
Since its inception earlier this year, Google has been actively improving the AI Overviews feature. Recently, the company added in-line links that appear within the text of the Overviews. This enhancement aims to increase website traffic compared to the earlier version, which relied solely on pulling text from various sources.
Moreover, Google plans to leverage AI Overviews to enhance its advertising revenue. Recently, it was revealed that ads in AI Overviews will now be shown on relevant queries for mobile users in the United States.
However, the launch of AI Overviews faced some criticism due to the presentation of incorrect and potentially harmful information. For example, the feature mistakenly suggested putting glue on pizza. In response, Google has been fine-tuning the functionality and has plans to extend similar features to its Shopping page.
