Elon Musk's xAI Introduces 'Aurora' Image Generator
On November 16, a bust of Elon Musk was unveiled along a highway just outside SpaceX's Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. In a notable development for artificial intelligence, Musk's xAI company launched a free beta version of its AI-powered image generator, named Aurora, on Saturday.
The Aurora service can create photo-realistic images upon request and is integrated through the Grok 2 add-on on Musk's X social media platform. This feature was made available for all users just earlier this week, expanding access to advanced AI tools.
App developer Chris Park celebrated the launch on his X account, stating, "Congrats @xai for releasing a brand new image gen model -- Aurora! Grok 2 + Aurora is now available with your X app in the model selector. Oh, by the way, Grok 3 is coming!" This highlights the company's commitment to ongoing development and innovation in the AI space.
According to reports from TechCrunch, the terms of the free Aurora service allow users to send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours and generate a maximum of three images per day. This structure facilitates user interaction while managing the demand on the system.
The timing of the rollout over a weekend has caught the attention of some AI analysts. Rowan Cheung, a producer of The Rundown AI newsletter, commented on the effort involved in such launches, noting, "I don't think people realize how much effort goes into these launches. OpenAI, Google, etc., would rarely -- if ever -- launch something big over the weekend, given the risks and the need to pull in more people if something goes wrong. Something to pay attention to."
However, there have been discussions regarding the guidelines for the content that can be generated through the Aurora service. Early users reported being able to create highly realistic images of various public figures, including Musk and notable politicians like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
When the image generator was first launched for premium subscribers in August, xAI stated that it was designed to avoid creating content that promotes "illegal activities" or produces "deepfakes or misleading media." Nevertheless, users have reported being able to generate controversial images, including depictions of former President Barack Obama in compromising situations and images of political candidates, such as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris with firearms.
This has raised questions about the effectiveness of the company's content regulation measures, inviting further scrutiny from users and stakeholders alike.
