Amazon Enhances Alexa with AI: Introducing Alexa+

Published February 27, 2025

Amazon has introduced a major update to its popular digital assistant, Alexa, integrating advanced artificial intelligence into the system. This upgrade, known as Alexa+, marks the most significant enhancement since Alexa was first launched over a decade ago in 2014, under the leadership of Jeff Bezos.

Panos Panay, the senior vice president of devices and services at Amazon, presented Alexa+ during an event in New York. He explained that the redesigned service harnesses generative AI technology to improve user experience.

With Alexa+, Amazon aims to elevate its largest consumer electronics franchise, allowing the assistant to take on more AI-powered capabilities. The goal is to transform Alexa from a simple assistant for queries into a proactive "agent" that can act on behalf of its users.

What Can Alexa+ Do For You

Amazon has made it clear that the new Alexa+ is designed for a wide range of tasks. Users can ask Alexa+ to complete various requests, from ordering groceries and making dinner reservations to purchasing concert tickets and providing recipe recommendations tailored for different family members.

In addition to these tasks, Alexa+ can help organize handwritten documents and retrieve necessary information from them. It can even read study guides and quiz users on their knowledge, showcasing the expanded capabilities the update has introduced.

During the presentation, Amazon illustrated Alexa+ in action by demonstrating how it could book an oven repair service. This means that users can rely on Alexa+ to handle these tasks independently, and they will receive updates and information via text messages or the Alexa app.

According to Panay, “She’ll learn the rhythm of your life and proactively take action with you.” Importantly, Alexa+ will work with nearly all existing Alexa devices sold by Amazon.

Alexa+ is built to remember user preferences, which includes tracking favorite songs, discovering new shows or recipes, creating personalized bedtime stories, reviewing team sports recaps, and reordering meals from favorite restaurants. Furthermore, Alexa+ can engage in longer, more natural conversations with users.

Here’s a brief list of things Alexa+ can do:

  • Order groceries
  • Make dinner reservations
  • Buy concert tickets
  • Get recipe recommendations for family members
  • Organize handwritten documents
  • Retrieve information
  • Remember user preferences

Pricing for Alexa+

For the first time, Amazon will implement a monthly subscription fee for Alexa’s enhanced service. The Alexa+ program will launch in early access next month at a cost of $19.99 per month. However, it will be available for free to Amazon Prime members, providing extra incentive for users to sign up for the Prime service.
