Published December 8, 2023

On a recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, the CEO of leading tech company Nvidia shared his insights on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia. Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive of Nvidia, spoke to reporters about Malaysia's potential as a central AI hub, especially with the growth of data centers across the region.

Malaysia's Role in AI Development

During the media roundtable, Huang discussed the capabilities of the Malaysian conglomerate YTL Corp. in contributing to the establishment of AI data centers, although he stopped short of confirming any ongoing negotiations with the conglomerate. He highlighted YTL's impressive track record and leadership, stating that the company could significantly advance the computing infrastructure necessary for such developments.

Gearing Up for AI Manufacturing

Nvidia's CEO pointed out Malaysia's strengths in manufacturing, particularly in packaging and assembly, as being conducive for the country to become a major player in AI 'manufacturing'. With Nvidia engaging with over 80 AI startups in Malaysia, there is a clear commitment to fostering an environment ripe for innovation and advancement in the AI sector.

Huang also stressed the importance of AI data centers, noting that the changing landscape of data processing requires facilities adept at refining and processing data tailored to each region's unique cultural and linguistic landscape. He expressed confidence in Southeast Asia's capability to emerge as a significant technology hub, building on its existing strengths in the technology supply chain, which includes packaging, assembly, and battery manufacturing.

The perspective offered by Huang is in line with a growing trend where regions across the globe are swiftly adapting to the demands of modern AI technology, exploring opportunities to harness and transform data into valuable insights through specialized data centers.
