LG and Meta Team Up to Fast-Track XR Innovations

Published February 28, 2024

LG Electronics (LG) is taking major steps to boost its extended reality (XR) initiatives by forming a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta). The goal of the alliance is to leverage each company's strong suits in order to propel advancement in customer experiences through the rapidly growing XR technology landscape.

Enhancing XR Collaboration

Recently top executives from LG, including CEO William Cho and the president of the Home Entertainment division, Park Hyoung-sei, met with Meta's Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg at LG's headquarters in Seoul. During Zuckerberg's tour of Asia, the two parties engaged in deep discussions on the advancement of XR devices, an area LG wishes to excel in. CEO Cho showed great interest in Meta's latest offerings, such as the Meta Quest 3 headset and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, while also focusing on the potential integration of large AI models within devices.

Building the Future of Extended Reality

LG aims to establish a unique XR ecosystem by blending its existing content and service prowess with Meta's robust platform. This collaboration is set to heighten innovation in XR product development, expanding beyond the current limitations of mobile screens to offer an immersive and intuitive experience. LG's focus on wearable technology indicates its commitment to expanding customer engagement through these future-facing personal devices.

Strategic Focus for Long-Term Success

Aligning with its broader strategy, LG has been realigning its resources toward areas with high growth potential while phasing out less productive ventures. The company's partnership with Meta is indicative of its intent to lead within the virtual experience realm, especially with a burgeoning XR market on the horizon. LG envisions transforming into a comprehensive Smart Life Solution Company by 2030 and has already structured a dedicated XR business unit to accelerate its goals.
