ChatGPT Service Restored After Significant Downtime, Reports OpenAI

Published December 14, 2023

OpenAI has announced the resolution of a significant disruption in service for its artificial intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT. After experiencing an outage, the AI chatbot faced around 40 minutes of issues, leaving many users unable to access the service or experiencing inconsistent availability.

Impact on Users and Businesses

The outage not only affected regular users but also had implications for businesses. ChatGPT Enterprise, a version tailored for business use, reported 'elevated error rates' among its users during the outage.

Recent Technical Difficulties

This isn't the first time ChatGPT has faced technical troubles. Earlier in the month, about 10% of ChatGPT's user base experienced issues with message delivery. Moreover, a significant outage occurred in the previous November.

Despite these setbacks, ChatGPT has seen rapid growth, becoming the fastest-growing consumer app in history with around 100 million weekly active users. It is also reported that a substantial portion of Fortune 500 companies incorporate this AI platform in their operations.

Management Upheavals at OpenAI

In a separate but notable event, OpenAI went through executive turbulence when CEO Sam Altman was fired in November, only to be quickly rehired after reactions from staff and investors.

The cause of the recent technical issues has not been disclosed by the organization.
