Sam Altman Joins Microsoft Following Termination from OpenAI

Published November 21, 2023

Sam Altman, the former CEO and a founding figure of OpenAI, has been recently hired by Microsoft after being unexpectedly dismissed by the startup's board of directors on Friday, November 17, 2023. Joining him in this new venture is Greg Brockman, another OpenAI cofounder, who resigned minutes after Altman's termination.

Microsoft's AI Team Welcomes New Leadership

Disclosed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on his private X account, the company is excited to welcome Altman and Brockman on board. Although specific roles have not been detailed, they are projected to direct Microsoft's burgeoning AI technology team.

This recruitment comes as Microsoft maintains its partnership with OpenAI, notwithstanding Altman's exit. Nadella touted the prospective contributions that Altman and Brockman, along with their colleagues, are expected to bring to Microsoft's AI research team.

The Distinct AI Services of ChatGPT and Bing

OpenAI and Microsoft represent major forces in the AI services landscape, with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing AI in the limelight. Both platforms use pre-trained generative language models; however, their functionalities differ, with ChatGPT operating as a versatile chatbot and Bing AI serving as both a search engine and an AI-powered chatbot.

Notwithstanding their differences, both AI systems perform similarly in tasks like essay writing and information research. The responses they provide vary due to the distinct training datasets they've been fed.

Conversational Abilities and Accuracy

Using advanced GPT models, ChatGPT and Bing AI engage in natural-sounding conversations and can handle complex inquiries. Bing AI is typically more current, able to access live internet search for fresh information, while ChatGPT holds a vast knowledge base up until 2021.

Bing AI, featuring the latest GPT-4, also stands out as one of the best AI image generators available for free. Compared to ChatGPT, Bing AI is geared to produce more natural and authentic dialogue.

Limits and Security Concerns

While Bing AI imposes a 30-chat daily limit, ChatGPT offers unlimited daily interactions. Security measures are a priority for both entities, especially concerning the misuse of ChatGPT by cybercriminals. Both OpenAI and Microsoft are actively mitigating risks by restricting suspicious content and conversations.

Cost Differences

ChatGPT operates for free but offers a paid subscription called ChatGPT Plus for advanced AI assistance. On the other hand, Microsoft plans to monetize Bing through ads, potentially keeping Bing AI free for users.
