The MacBook Air's Free RAM Upgrade: A Smart Move from Apple

Published October 31, 2024

Apple recently announced the launch of its M4 MacBook series, but another piece of news may carry even greater significance for consumers. The company has upgraded the base memory of its M2 and M3 MacBook Air models to 16GB of RAM. The exciting part is that the starting price for these laptops will remain $999.

The new memory enhancement applies specifically to the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air and both the 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air models. However, the 15-inch M2 MacBook Air will not see any increase in its base memory, keeping it at 8GB of RAM.

Furthermore, there is now an option for the M3 MacBook Air with 24GB of RAM. Pricing for this model begins at $1,699, which is consistent with the previous high-end option. Aside from this hardware upgrade, the overall series will remain unchanged, retaining the same storage options, Liquid Retina displays, and color choices.

Having extra memory enhances the capabilities of these laptops, making them more appealing to users. With more RAM, these devices can offer quicker internet browsing, smoother app performance, and improved multitasking.

However, the motivation behind this RAM upgrade may extend beyond simply boosting user experience. One primary reason could be linked to the demands of generative AI, which typically requires substantial resources from the devices that support it. Consequently, an increase in RAM may have been seen as essential.

Interestingly, recent iPhones, like the iPhone 16, can manage AI functionalities with just 8GB of RAM. This difference suggests that the mobile version of Apple's AI is less demanding compared to its MacBook counterparts, which require more power to function effectively.

Another factor in this upgrade relates to Apple's future plans; the company currently appears to have no intentions of releasing an M4 MacBook Air in the immediate future. With only eight months having passed since the introduction of the M3 MacBook Air, it seems premature for Apple to unveil a successor. Launching a new device might risk reducing sales of the existing model. It is likely that the M4 MacBook Air will not be revealed until 2025—possibly around March or April.
