Chatbot Market Becomes More Competitive with Baidu's Launch of X1

Published March 18, 2025

Chinese Internet company Baidu has announced the launch of a new AI model named X1, along with a chatbot that will be available for free. This launch places Baidu in direct competition with other companies in the rapidly growing chatbot market.

Baidu claims that X1 has certain advantages over DeepSeek, a recently released competitor that has developed its own AI model and chatbot. DeepSeek's chatbot is said to perform comparably well to renowned chatbots such as ChatGPT but is offered at a lower price. In contrast, Baidu argues that its X1 model can deliver similar performance but at just half the cost of DeepSeek.

As the first company in China to publicly develop a platform for advanced AI applications, Baidu is well-established in this field. However, the AI and chatbot landscape is becoming increasingly crowded, with other major players like ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, and Moonshot AI drawing significant user attention.

Baidu's X1 is powered by a foundational model known as ERNIE 4.5, which excels in multimodal understanding. This capability allows the platform to effectively process and convert various forms of data, including sound, images, and text. Baidu contends that ERNIE 4.5 also surpasses the capabilities of OpenAI’s latest language model in terms of text generation.

The launch of X1 marks a significant step for Baidu as it seeks to solidify its position in the competitive AI market. With Free access to the chatbot, the company hopes to attract more users and showcase the strengths of its latest offering.
