Anthropic Launches Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Haiku AI Models

Published October 23, 2024

Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI, has recently announced an upgrade to its AI model named Claude 3.5 Sonnet and has introduced another model called Claude 3.5 Haiku. The Claude 3.5 Sonnet model boasts a revolutionary feature that enables it to interact with computers in a way that mimics human behavior.

What Happened: While this new computer interaction feature is still in the experimental stage and has some limitations—particularly in tasks such as scrolling and dragging—Anthropic is optimistic about rapid advancements in this area. Developers can utilize this upgrade to automate various processes and engage in open-ended tasks, with notable companies such as Asana, Canva, and Replit already testing these new capabilities.

Currently, the computer interaction feature is available in public beta on the API, allowing developers to guide Claude to perform tasks such as moving the cursor and entering text. The Claude 3.5 Sonnet model is accessible to all users, while the Claude 3.5 Haiku is scheduled for release later this month. Anthropic’s API empowers Claude to convert instructions into computer commands, significantly boosting its capacity to execute complex tasks. When tested on OSWorld, the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model achieved a score of 14.9% in the screenshot-only category, surpassing other AI systems.

Why It Matters: The release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet comes against the backdrop of rising concerns regarding AI's potential influence on employment. Vinod Khosla, a billionaire from Silicon Valley, has predicted that AI technology could replace a majority of human jobs within the next 25 years, impacting various roles from medical professionals to factory workers. This has ignited discussions around Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a possible solution.

However, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has voiced concerns that UBI alone might not adequately address the inequalities arising from AI advancements. He believes that a more holistic approach is essential to ensure fair wealth distribution, stressing the importance of creating a society where everyone can play an economic role. Anthropic was co-founded by Amodei in 2021.
