Elon Musk's xAI Tests Standalone iOS App for Grok Chatbot

Published December 24, 2024

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is currently testing a standalone iOS app for its Grok chatbot. This chatbot has mainly been available to users on the X platform until now.

According to a report from TechCrunch, the Grok app is in beta testing in Australia and a few selected countries. The app is designed to provide a range of AI features, including the ability to rewrite text, generate images based on text inputs, summarize lengthy content, and answer questions.

The app store description emphasizes that "Grok is an AI-powered assistant designed to be maximally truthful, useful, and curious. Users can get answers to any question, create striking images, and even upload pictures for a better understanding of their environment." This highlights the app's versatility and user-friendly nature.

In addition to the iOS app, xAI is also developing a dedicated website for Grok. Currently, when users access the site, they see a message stating that it is "Coming soon," indicating that more features or information will be available shortly.

Previously, access to Grok was limited to premium subscribers of X. However, in December, the company made the chatbot freely available to all users of X. Free account holders on the platform can use the Grok chatbot to generate 10 prompts every two hours. In terms of image generation, users can create up to 10 images, but they can only analyze three of those images in a single day. If they wish to exceed this limit, a subscription will be required.

In terms of funding, xAI has been remarkable in its fundraising efforts. The startup has raised $6 billion in new funding according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This means the total capital raised by xAI has reached an impressive $12 billion, showcasing its rapid growth and potential in the AI industry.
