Kia's Modular EV Platform: A New Era for Customizable Vans
Kia is poised to change the game in the multi-purpose van sector by introducing a future where custom modifications no longer rely on costly external customization but are instead available directly from the manufacturer. At 2024's CES, Kia caught attendees' attention with its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) concept. It's a vision of versatility, offering electric vans in various configurations that can be used as passenger shuttles or delivery vehicles, and even converted into mobile businesses.
The Dawn of Tailor-Made Electric Vans
The first step in Kia's ambitious plan is the PV5 electric van, signaling the start of what the company refers to as 'highly customizable, bespoke mobility solutions.' The uniqueness of the PV5 lies in its interchangeable structures, above the chassis, that can be swapped out depending on the customer's requirement. This hybrid approach of electromagnetic and mechanical coupling means the van can be easily transformed to suit different functions, from carrying passengers to moving goods.
Ingenious Modular Design
The Kia PV5 is designed to be the 'everything van of the future' with its novel, pillar-less architecture which greatly simplifies the process of altering the vehicle's purpose on the fly. The vision includes an interior with rail systems attached to the roof, floor, and side panels, as well as the external frame. This ingenious design facilitates the easy transportation of goods within the van. Kia's concepts even hint at features like mobile racks that extend out from the vehicle, and flexible tiling systems inside the van for holding various accessories and equipment.
But Kia's vision doesn't end with the PV5. They have plans to release an array of PBV models, including the PV7 which will be their largest PBV to date, and the PV1 tailored for shorter journeys. A unique aspect of these future releases is the incorporation of a 'customer participation-based development process,' particularly for large-volume corporate clients. And to complement the hardware, Kia aims to incorporate smart, AI-driven software features to optimize vehicle performance and efficiency, such as predictive maintenance, route planning, and comprehensive fleet management systems.
