Microsoft Pledges $500 Million To Bolster Quebec's AI and Cloud Computing Ecosystem
Microsoft is committing a substantial $500 million to beef up its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in Quebec, declaring a strategic plan for development over the coming two years. This heavy investment will significantly enhance AI infrastructure and cloud computing assets across Quebec, mapping a future fostered by technological advancement and innovation.
Building Quebec's Data Centre Network
Key components of Microsoft’s investment plan include constructing several data centre locations in L’Ancienne-Lorette, Donnacona, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, and Lévis. These efforts will actually begin in the near months, promising a boost to Microsoft's computing capacity in the region by an estimated 240 percent over the next three years. This growth comes in addition to the existing resources, drawing from the province's established data centre region initiated back in 2016.
Impact on Quebec's Economy and Job Market
Chris Barry, the president of Microsoft Canada, emphasized that these investments are more than just an enhancement of infrastructure; they will bolster the transformation capabilities of Quebec’s economic players. The aim is to furnish both private and public sectors with increased capacity and resilience. This will, in turn, facilitate faster and more secure deployment of digital solutions, helping Quebec thrive in the global digital economy.
The influence of Microsoft's presence in Quebec is already significant. According to a study by Ernst & Young, this includes support for over 57,000 jobs, a network of more than 3,200 partners, and a contribution of $6.4 billion annually to the provincial GDP. Furthermore, François-Philippe Champagne, the Industry Minister, has recognized Quebec as a global leader in AI innovation. He expressed the government's dedication to fostering a beneficial AI ecosystem with the help of partners like Microsoft.
Commitment to Sustainability
In line with its 2030 sustainability ambitions, Microsoft pledges that the forthcoming data centre sites will uphold the company’s sustainability goals to be carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste. The plans include the adoption of renewable energy sources, advanced cooling technologies, and a reduction in diesel fuel utilization during their operation phases, embracing ecologically responsible practices.
Investing in Quebec's Workforce
Complementing these infrastructure investments, Microsoft has launched skilling initiatives targeted at empowering Quebec's workforce. For instance, a collaboration with NPower Canada will usher in an intermediate Junior Data Analyst program for French-speaking individuals in Quebec, aligned with Microsoft's Azure AI Fundamentals certifications, commencing in May 2024.
Moreover, in conjunction with KPMG, a $1.7 million commitment over three years will establish a new Quebec-based Operational Risk Skills Development Centre. The center's objective is to provide free, hands-on training in cybersecurity and generative AI to foster a secure and innovative adoption of these technologies. More than 11,000 executives are anticipated to benefit from the training, which will be delivered in French.
