OpenAI Partners with Future to Expand ChatGPT Content

Published December 5, 2024

OpenAI has recently announced a licensing agreement with Future, a prominent publisher known for its leading media brands including Tom’s Guide, PC Gamer, TechRadar, and Marie Claire. This new deal will allow users of ChatGPT to access a wide range of news and lifestyle articles from Future’s extensive portfolio of over 200 media outlets.

The Significance of the Deal

The partnership aims to enhance the user experience in ChatGPT by integrating diverse and trustworthy content from Future’s various platforms. Users will benefit from more engaging, updated, and reliable information, while links and attributions to the original articles will be provided to ensure credit to the content creators.

This collaboration adds to OpenAI’s series of content licensing agreements made in recent months. Previous agreements have included partnerships with notable entities such as Vox Media, which owns The Verge, News Corp (owner of The Wall Street Journal), Dotdash Meredith, Axel Springer (parent of Politico), and major publications like The Financial Times and The Atlantic. However, OpenAI also faces legal challenges from several publishers, including The New York Times, The Intercept, and a coalition of Canadian media outlets like CBC, who have sued the company for alleged copyright violations.

Future’s Use of OpenAI Technology

According to OpenAI, this partnership expands on Future's existing use of its technology. Future has already implemented AI chatbots on platforms like Tom’s Hardware and Who What Wear. Furthermore, the company plans to utilize OpenAI’s capabilities for various functions including sales and marketing, as well as enhancing editorial content.

OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership enables us to enhance the ChatGPT experience by providing more access to engaging, up to date, and reliable information from a range of specialist sources. Our goal is to help publishers and content creators both benefit from advanced AI technology and expand their reach.”
