Mahindra Racing Drops AI Influencer Ava After Fan Backlash

Published January 12, 2024

Mahindra Racing embarked on an initiative to further inclusivity and diversity within its Formula E team by introducing Ava, an AI mascot designed to embody sustainable technology and innovation. As a trailblazing symbol, Ava was unveiled with the purpose of engaging with fans and casting light on the team's endeavors at the Formula E season opener in Mexico City.

Despite intentions for Ava to serve as a digital champion showcasing Mahindra's venture into advanced, eco-friendly tech, the campaign to employ the AI influencer was short-lived. Two days into her role, a torrent of criticism from fans and online commentators forced Mahindra to halt the project.

Ava's Brief Stint and Growing Controversy

The backlash erupted over the team's decision to use an artificial figure rather than a real woman, especially due to the male-dominated field of motor racing. The absence of female drivers in the upcoming series further compounded the discontent.

Voices on social media condemned the move, arguing that it undermined real women in motorsport and suggesting that racing organizations appear willing to do anything but hire actual women. This feedback ultimately led to Mahindra Racing's team principal, Frederic Bertrand, announcing an end to the Ava influencer endeavor, emphasizing that community feedback was heard, understood, and acted upon.

The Rise and Challenges of AI 'Human Talent'

While Ava could have made history in racing, her case is not singular in terms of AI representations in industries typically dominated by human talent. Other examples include an AI model from a Spanish agency dissatisfied with human model constraints and Caryn Marjorie's 'virtual girlfriend' persona, showcasing how AI can be lucrative in the influencer space. However, when Levi Strauss attempted to promote diversity through AI-generated models, it too faced pushback, underscoring the complex reception of AI replacing human representation.

The swift suspension of Ava's role at Mahindra highlights the delicate balance companies must strike when integrating AI into roles traditionally held by humans and the ongoing discussion about the ethics and impacts of such a choice in various fields.
