TikTok Returns to US App Stores as Google Maps Adjusts Gulf Designation

Published February 14, 2025

TikTok Is Back

TikTok, the widely used video-sharing application, has made its return to the app stores of Apple and Google in the United States. This change comes after former President Donald Trump indicated that the tech giants would not face penalties for reactivating the app. TikTok had previously been removed from the stores due to concerns regarding its Chinese parent company ByteDance, which faced a law enacted on January 19 mandating its sale or the possibility of a ban. The worries stemmed from allegations that the Chinese government could use TikTok to monitor American users. With nearly half of all Americans using the app, its brief removal sparked significant public interest and frustration.

Google Maps Controversy

In a related incident, Google Maps has recently blocked users from leaving reviews for the Gulf of Mexico after it faced backlash for rebranding the area as the "Gulf of America" for American users. This name change was in response to a request from Donald Trump, who called for the alteration in official governmental documents. Now, when users click on the Gulf's label in Google Maps, a message appears stating that posting is currently turned off. Additionally, it seems that Google has removed some negative comments that were posted after the name change.

WhatsApp Update

WhatsApp has also announced an update that enhances user experience. Starting Thursday, users can now enjoy a variety of chat theme options for both iOS and Android. This new feature allows for personalized chat environments with colorful bubbles and unique wallpapers. Previously, users could customize their wallpaper, but this update takes personalization further, providing multiple themes.
