OpenAI Introduces Web Search Feature in ChatGPT

Published October 31, 2024

OpenAI has enhanced its popular AI tool, ChatGPT, by integrating a new web search capability. This update aims to improve how users access timely and relevant information directly within the chat environment. In the past, ChatGPT's use as a search tool was limited due to its knowledge cutoff, which affected its ability to provide the latest information.

Launch of ChatGPT Search

On Thursday, OpenAI announced the introduction of the ChatGPT search feature. This functionality enables users to search the internet seamlessly while using ChatGPT, making it easier to discover up-to-date information with citations that link back to their sources. The search function can be automatically activated based on user prompts or manually triggered by clicking a designated search button.

Unlike conventional search engines, ChatGPT utilizes the context of ongoing conversations to refine its answers. This contextual approach allows for more personalized and relevant responses to user inquiries.

Each response generated by ChatGPT includes in-line links to the sources from which the information was gathered. Users can view detailed references by clicking the Sources button, which opens a sidebar mimicking a traditional search results page.

Technology Behind the Search Model

The search feature is powered by a fine-tuned version of OpenAI's latest model, GPT-4o, which has been enhanced through innovative synthetic data generation techniques. OpenAI has also collaborated with various news and data providers to supply users with relevant, up-to-date content and visual elements tailored to specific interests, such as weather updates. For instance, features like weather widgets are enabled through a partnership with Accuweather.

Availability of the Search Feature

The new search functionality is now accessible on the ChatGPT website, as well as on desktop and mobile applications for all ChatGPT Plus and Team users, along with those on the SearchGPT waitlist. OpenAI has indicated that Enterprise and Education users will gain access in the coming weeks, while free users can expect access later on.

The prototype of this feature, known as SearchGPT, was initially released in July. OpenAI collected user feedback during this phase to refine and incorporate the best aspects into the current search experience within ChatGPT.

Future Improvements

OpenAI plans to continually enhance this search function by focusing on aspects such as shopping and travel, as well as integrating advanced reasoning capabilities to facilitate deeper research. Future updates aim to also introduce advanced voice interactions and a canvas feature.
