Music Artist Grimes Ventures into AI Plushie Market with Grok, Unrelated to Elon Musk's AI Project

Published December 16, 2023

Canadian musician and artist Grimes is venturing into a new domain – the toy industry – with her involvement in a visionary line of AI-powered plushies. Curio, the company behind this project, is introducing an interactive, screen-free toy named 'Grok,' which features Grimes' voice. This plushie is aimed at sparking creativity and play in children without the need for digital screens.

'Grok' The Plushie: A New Companion for Kids

'Grok' is part of a trio of plush toys that include 'Gabbo' and 'Grem.' Grok takes the shape of a cuddly rocket ship, Gabbo resembles a plush game console with limbs, and Grem is styled as a cyan bunny with heart-adorned cheeks. These plush toys engage children in conversations, help answer their queries about the world around them, and play interactive games, furthering their conversational and listening skills.

The plushies incorporate a Wi-Fi-enabled speaker and mic, rechargeable for continuous play, and connect to an app that lets parents monitor and set up interactions with their children. These toys are designed not just for entertainment but as educational tools to help with youth development, appealing to parents seeking alternatives to screen time for their children.

Trademark Coincidence and No Affiliation with Musk's AI

It's important to note that this AI plushie 'Grok' by Curio is entirely unaffiliated with Elon Musk's AI chatbot, which coincidentally shares the same name. While Musk's version of Grok is built for adults, with an inclination towards resisting censorship and engaging with 'spicier' adult topics, Grimes' Grok is entirely child-oriented.

In an interesting twist, Curio had trademarked the name 'Grok' before the announcement of Musk's AI, leading to a curious overlap. Grimes' Grok, designated for Curio's plush toy, is short for 'Grocket.' The trademark filing was a precursory action by Curio on September 12, predating the October 23 trademark filing by xAI for their AI. The name Grocket holds a sentimental value as a playful nod to Grimes' children's familiarity with rockets, given their father's association with SpaceX.

Grimes' Vision for Children and Technology

Grimes' collaboration with Curio aligns with her preference for her children's reduced exposure to screens, recommending verbal interactions that challenge young minds to utilize their working memory and cognitive skills. She envisions a future where soft-glowing teddy bears infused with AI not only provide company but also expand the imaginative horizons of children. Curio's plushies serve this vision by inviting children to a world where playful learning thrives without the need for passive screen-based entertainment.

The launch of these plushies comes during a time when Grimes and Musk are navigating a custody arrangement, encapsulating an instance where personal developments intersect with technological advancements, as both individuals independently push the boundaries of AI, albeit for different audiences.
