Google Introduces AI-Powered Phone Calling Feature

Do you dislike making phone calls? Google has introduced a new feature that utilizes artificial intelligence to handle calls to businesses on your behalf.

The feature, called "Ask for Me,", is currently being tested and allows users to obtain information about various services, such as pricing and availability.

Details of the Feature

At this moment, the "Ask for Me" feature is limited to inquiries about nail salons and auto repair shops, as shared by Google’s product lead, Rose Yao, on the social media platform X.

When a user searches for nail salons or auto shops, they may see a prompt to use the "Ask for Me" feature. By selecting this option, users will be guided through a series of questions. These questions include details like the type of car they own, the service they require, and their preferred time for an appointment. Users will also need to provide their email and phone number to receive updates about the request.

How It Works

According to Google spokesperson Craig Ewer, every call made through the "Ask for Me" feature starts with an announcement that it’s an automated system calling from Google on behalf of a user.

To avoid overwhelming businesses with calls, there are call quotas in place. Ewer indicated that any information gathered during these calls could be beneficial for similar requests from other users in the future.

Businesses that prefer not to receive these automated calls can opt-out through their Google Business Profile settings or by informing Google during a call.

Current Availability and Limitations

Presently, the "Ask for Me" feature is exclusive to nail salons and auto repair services, with plans for potential expansion in the future. Users eager to try out the feature may find themselves on a waitlist due to limited capacity during this testing phase.

Built on the same technology that powers Google Duplex, the "Ask for Me" feature enhances users' experiences by making it easier to obtain essential information without ever having to pick up the phone.

As Google continues to develop this tool, it could significantly streamline how individuals interact with businesses, especially for those who are uncomfortable making phone calls.
