Apple Consolidates Siri Quality Control in Austin, Urging San Diego Team to Relocate
In a significant restructuring move, Apple Inc. has announced the merger of its Siri quality control team from San Diego with a counterpart team in Austin, Texas. This change affects a total of 121 employees, who now face a tough decision: relocate to Austin by April 26 or risk termination from the company. This strategy was first brought to light through a report from Bloomberg, revealing that the affected Apple team members are those responsible for reviewing Siri voice interactions to ensure the virtual assistant's accuracy and efficiency.
Surprise Relocation for Siri Team
The move came as a shock to the San Diego team members who had been initially informed of a transition to a different San Diego campus, set for January. Instead, they are now confronted with the prospect of relocating to Texas. In response to this sudden change of plans, Apple has offered internal job applications, leaving some employees doubtful about their chances for qualification for other roles within the company. The decision to move is further complicated by the abrupt timeframe, making it a challenge for many to uproot their lives on short notice.
Relocation Support and Severance
For those willing to make the move to Austin, Apple is providing a $7,000 stipend. However, employees who decide not to relocate will not be left without support. The tech giant has outlined a severance package that includes four weeks of base pay in addition to an extra week's pay for each year of service at Apple. Furthermore, the company is offering six months of health insurance as a part of the severance agreement. The San Diego team's proficiency spans multiple languages, enabling them to scrutinize Siri's performance in languages such as Hebrew, English, Spanish, and Arabic.
The AI Competition and Apple's Investments
Despite Apple's rigorous quality control measures, the perception persists in the industry that the company lags behind its competitors in the AI domain, particularly with its digital assistant, Siri. Nonetheless, the company has been intensifying efforts to enhance its AI capabilities, attracting media companies to provide training data and investing heavily in artificial intelligence development. Apple has made its AI development frameworks and libraries available on code repositories and is actively refining its large language models (LLMs) for better integration with iPhone devices. Further details on Apple's AI strategy are anticipated to be shared in June, signaling the company's commitment to establishing a stronger presence in the AI market.
