Amazon's AGI Division Restructuring Months After Formation

Published November 22, 2023

An internal document has surfaced indicating a significant reorganization within Amazon.com Inc.'s nascent Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) department, which arrived on the scene a mere four months earlier.

Rohit Prasad Leads Departmental Overhaul

Under the guidance of Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist Rohit Prasad, the AGI team is distributing responsibilities for certain Alexa-related projects to the broader Devices division. This development was initially reported by Business Insider after an email leak.

Recent Layoffs Precede AGI Restructure

Following recent workforce reductions within the AGI group, specifically impacting the Alexa team, the company is looking to refine their strategy towards AGI developments. Prasad expressed confidence in the team's achievements for Alexa and AGI but acknowledged that the new changes are essential to "further sharpen our focus on this mission and deliver faster for our customers."

New Focus Areas for the AGI Team

The reshuffle within Amazon's AGI team has led to the establishment of six pivotal focus areas. This strategic move demonstrates Amazon's intention to challenge competitors like Microsoft and Google in the artificial intelligence sector. These focal points include foundational models, AGI conversational assistants, and corresponding infrastructure services meant to advance the company’s AI capabilities.

Staff Redeployments and Team Reconfigurations

Personnel historically linked with developing Alexa features are finding their new homes within the Devices team. In contrast, the AGI unit is undergoing a reorganization into six newly minted subdivisions, including AGI Product, AGI Data Services, AGI Foundational Models, AGI Sensory and Machine Learning Builder Services, AGI Conversational Assistant Services, and AGI Information.
