Robotic Manicures Revolutionizing the Beauty Industry

Published January 10, 2024

The beauty industry is undergoing a transformation led by technological innovations such as robotic manicures and AI-driven skin care advice that were once reserved for the wealthy and famous. With the aim to democratize luxury beauty services, companies are incorporating artificial intelligence and complex robotic systems into household devices.

Enter Nimble: The World's First Home Manicure Robot

One such breakthrough is Nimble, a device touted as the first in the world to utilize both AI and intricate robotics for the purpose of nail painting and drying in just 25 minutes, all from the comfort of home. Nimble, which does not require an appointment, has been introduced as sounding the bell for a new era in home beauty treatments.

The CES Debut of a Nail-Painting Innovator

The eight-kilogram white box named Nimble made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, championing the convergence of beauty and technology. It boasts high-resolution micro cameras and 3D imaging to accurately determine each nail’s shape, size, and curvature. Following this, a small robotic arm, directed by AI algorithms, applies a 'base-coat-polish' sequence and a blow dryer works between coats to speed up the process.

The Promise of AI in Beauty and Skin Care

AI is a staple in consumer technology innovation and has now made its way into makeup and skin care products, establishing more personal connections with customers. This sentiment was echoed by Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO of cosmetic giant L'Oréal, who noted that technological advancements offer inclusive experiences and allow individuals to express their identities.

L'Oréal took the occasion at CES to present their Airlight Pro, a tailor-configurable hair dryer that considers hair type and optimizes power and heat distribution. Launching in April, Airlight Pro uses infrared light for drying to lock in moisture and is 31% more energy efficient than conventional models.

Beauty Genius, another innovation from L'Oréal, is a free app that serves as a virtual personal advisor, offering makeup and skin care recommendations, answering questions on issues like acne or hair loss, and allowing users to virtually test products.

Beauty Tech on the Rise

Global beauty industry statistics from a McKinsey study estimate its worth at $430 billion in 2022, with projections hitting $580 billion by 2027. Furthermore, internet sales have quadrupled from 2015 to 2022, showcasing the burgeoning growth of beauty tech.

The Korean company Prinker, known for temporary tattoos, introduces a new makeup application product. Like others, it utilizes 3D biometric scanning to map facial features and advise on makeup choices while 'printing' the makeup directly onto skin.

Another milestone for the industry is the Colorsonic, a hair coloring device that operates with reusable cartridges, set for release later in the year.
