Published February 7, 2024

On the forefront of technological advancements, the Biden administration is set to appoint Elizabeth Kelly as the director of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Institute, a new endeavour to ensure that AI systems are designed with consumer and business safety in mind. An official within the administration, who requested anonymity, revealed that this announcement is expected to take place on Wednesday.

Introducing Elizabeth Kelly

Elizabeth Kelly, who will spearhead the AI Safety Institute under the National Institute for Standards and Technology, currently serves as an economic policy adviser to President Joe Biden. Kelly's credentials extend through her effective involvement in formulating the executive order which resulted in the inception of the institute. Her academic and professional background includes a degree from Yale Law School, a tenure at the Obama White House, and a position at Capital One.

Role of the AI Safety Institute

The mission of the AI Safety Institute is pivotal to the secure and trustworthy expansion of AI technology. By July, it aims to establish 'red team' test standards for AI developers, setting a benchmark for the safety of AI systems. These standards will likely aid in building confidence in AI, allowing for broader implementation across various sectors.

Previously, the government mandated AI companies to conduct safety tests; however, these did not adhere to a consistent framework. The institute endeavours to change this by the summer, providing a universal set of guidelines for AI system examination.
