OpenAI's Efforts to Resolve Service Outages

Published December 27, 2024

OpenAI is currently focused on resolving high error rates emerging from its various AI platforms, including OpenAI, Sora, and the affiliated APIs.

The company reported that the problems commenced at around 10:40 AM PST, leading to increased error rates on its services. At that moment, OpenAI shared the following update:

"Starting at 10:40 AM PST, we experienced high error rates on ChatGPT, Sora, and a subset of APIs. Recovery began for Sora around 2:58 PM PST, API traffic resumed at about 3:05 PM PST, and full restoration of ChatGPT was achieved around 8:16 PM PST. We are continuing to investigate a separate issue with Sora and will keep our status page updated."

Later, OpenAI confirmed that the source of the problem was linked to an upstream provider, although the company did not disclose the name of the provider or the specifics of the issue.

As of Thursday evening, OpenAI was still addressing some difficulties related to Sora, while ChatGPT services largely returned to normal operation.

The company emphasized, "We are still looking into the high error rates occurring on the Sora editor and will provide further updates as they become available."
