Intel's Stock Outlook Improves with BofA Securities Analyst Upgrade

Published December 15, 2023

On a recent Friday, a considerable shift in opinion occurred regarding Intel Corporation's stock as an analyst at BofA Securities decided to terminate his bearish stance. Vivek Arya, the analyst in question, has changed his position despite lingering concerns about the chipmaker's challenges in the PC market and competition from rivals like Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and ARM Holdings PLC. Intel's PC market prospects seem restrained and it continues to lose ground in the server segment to these competitors.

Encouraging Developments Amid Concerns

Nevertheless, there are elements of Intel's operations that are inspiring a more optimistic view. Arya is encouraged by certain segments such as Intel's Mobileye autonomous-driving division and its ambitions in the semiconductor foundry sector.

Stock Revaluation on the Horizon

Furthermore, Arya believes Intel’s stock is undervalued when evaluated on a sum-of-the-parts basis, which is likely to evolve as Intel plans to disclose separate financials for its design and manufacturing wings early next year. This move is anticipated to provide a clearer picture, allowing each unit to be compared with its industry peers. Another prospect for Intel is the potential spinoff of its field-programmable gate-array operations into a standalone public entity, which might prime the stock for a revaluation.

Favorable adjustments were made by Arya in his ratings, upgrading Intel to 'neutral' from 'underperform' and raising the target price to $50 from the previous $32. In a turn of upsides, Arya also sees Advanced Micro Devices as pri,ed for gaining market share and upgraded his view on AMD to 'buy' from 'neutral', while increasing the target price to $165 from $135. Nvidia Corp. remains his top pick for capturing compute and AI trends, though Arya acknowledges that AI and generative AI are broad opportunities with potential for many players in the sector.

Stock performance reflected these changes by the end of the trading session on Friday, with AMD stocks slightly rising by 0.6% and Intel's enjoying an uptick of 1.9%.
