Google Introduces Video Features for Gemini Live Chatbot

Published March 3, 2025

Google (GOOGL) is set to introduce exciting video capabilities for its AI chatbot, Gemini Live, later this month. This long-awaited update aims to enhance user interaction by allowing select users to engage with the chatbot using their Android device's camera and screen sharing features.

New Capabilities Unveiled

With the upcoming update, users will be able to ask Gemini Live specific questions based on what they see in live video footage. This includes seeking style advice while shopping online by sharing their screen, or requesting interior design tips as they move the camera around their living space.

Access and Availability

However, these new features will be available exclusively to subscribers of the Gemini Advanced plan, which is part of the monthly $20 Google One AI Premium package. Users can look forward to a more interactive and personalized experience with the chatbot.

The official announcement of these features was made at the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, where Google has been teasing enhancements for nearly a year. Compelling video demonstrations highlighted the capabilities of Gemini Live.

Looking Back: The Evolution of Gemini

The introduction of video features follows the release of Gemini 2.0 in December, which marked a significant advancement in Google's AI capabilities. Additionally, a new feature known as Deep Research was introduced, allowing the chatbot to compile detailed research reports on behalf of users.

Earlier hints about video functionality emerged during the Google I/O conference in May 2024, where executives showcased Project Astra—a prototype of a multimodal AI assistant. This prototype demonstrated the ability to process video input to provide contextual answers about a user’s environment. Future possibilities discussed included the potential for the assistant to see through smart glasses, though no further product launches were confirmed in the recent announcement.
