AI Mimics David Attenborough: Developer's Life Narrated by Synthetic Voice

Published November 18, 2023

In an intriguing blend of technology and mimicry, developer Charlie Holtz used advanced artificial intelligence tools to create a video where an AI clone of David Attenborough narrates his day-to-day activities. The AI, which synthesizes the voice of the renowned naturalist, described Holtz's actions in Attenborough's signature documentary style, from wearing glasses to drinking water.

How It Was Created

To achieve this feat, Holtz employed GPT-4 Vision (GPT-4V) for visual analysis and ElevenLabs' technology for voice cloning. A script captures a photo from Holtz's webcam every five seconds and sends it to GPT-4V. The AI then generates a description in Attenborough's narrative tone, which is vocalized using the voice cloning software with a profile trained on Attenborough's own speech. This combination brings to life a realistic, albeit unauthorized, imitation of the famous broadcaster.

AI and Ethics

This development touches upon the field of artificial intelligence by showcasing how AI can process visual data and generate human-like speech. However, it also raises ethical concerns regarding voice cloning and the potential misuse of someone's persona without authorization. Such technological advancements highlight the growing capabilities of AI while prompting discussions about consent and intellectual property rights.
