Ford Advises EV Owners to Stop Using Tesla Supercharger Adapters

Published October 22, 2024

Ford has recently issued a notice advising electric vehicle (EV) owners to cease the use of its Tesla Supercharger adapter. This adapter connects Ford's EVs to any North American Charging Standard (NACS) charger, but the company has identified a problem that could lower charging speeds and potentially damage the charging port.

The automaker announced that it will soon provide a replacement adapter to affected users and requests the return of the faulty device. Shipping costs for returning the original adapter, as well as the replacement, will be covered by Ford at no charge.

This incident marks another notable misstep for Ford, particularly as the release of this adapter was already postponed multiple times due to issues with its suppliers. The situation is compounded by the fact that these adapters are not simply gadgets; they interface with powerful Superchargers capable of delivering up to 250kW of charging power.

Additionally, Ford may feel some pressure after having to forge a charging agreement with Tesla, as it plans to adopt the NACS as its charging standard by 2025.
