Apple to Unveil Generative AI Features in its Upcoming iPhones, Says CEO Tim Cook

Published February 2, 2024

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the tech giant is currently developing generative AI (GenAI) features, which are slated for unveiling later this year. This reveal came about during Apple's quarterly earnings call, where Cook shared insights into the company's focus on innovative AI software features.

Investment in Future Technologies

Speaking to analysts, Cook expressed that Apple's future involves continued investment in transformative technologies, among which artificial intelligence is a key area. He stated, "As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future." The anticipation around Apple's AI advancements has piqued the interest of both consumers and industry experts alike.

Generative AI: A New Frontier for Apple

Cook mentioned Apple's excitement to share more about its generative AI endeavors later in the year, which suggests significant strides in innovation comparable to rivals such as Microsoft, Google, and recently, Samsung. Unlike these competitors, however, Apple has maintained secrecy around the specifics of its AI projects. Cook explained this approach by emphasizing the company's preference to avoid premature disclosures.

Earlier this year, analysts from Bank of America recognized the potential impact of AI on Apple's valuation, leading to an upgraded price target for the company's stock. The integration of AI features into upcoming iPhone models was cited as a catalyst for this improvement.

Apple's AI Ecosystem and Silicon

In preparation for these advancements, Apple's machine learning team has been working on frameworks and libraries optimized for the company's custom silicon chips. Last December, they introduced MLX, which is a framework tailored for high-performance machine learning on Apple hardware.

The commitment to AI was further underscored last November when Cook highlighted the company's substantial investments in the field. He assured that Apple is taking a responsible approach to AI, with the aim of integrating it into product enhancements over time.
