Spectacular December Update Elevates Google Pixel 8 Pro with Native Gemini Nano AI Capabilities

Published December 6, 2023

Earlier this year, the launch of the Google Pixel 8 Pro was marked by its emphasis on sophisticated AI capabilities, differentiating it from standard Android phones. Google is now enhancing the AI prowess of the device with an update that integrates the Gemini Nano model, one of Google's most compact and efficient AI models to date.

Empowering the Pixel 8 Pro with Local AI Processing

To harness the potential of Gemini Nano, Google developed Android AI Core within Android 14. This platform enables the new AI model to run directly on the Tensor mobile chips, which are Google's in-house processors. This ensures that sensitive operations are performed on the device without any data leaving the phone. What's more, these AI-driven functions can be accessed offline, without the need for an internet connection.

Unlocking New Features with Gemini Nano

Among the first features rolling out thanks to Gemini Nano is a smart summarization system within the Pixel 8 Pro's Recorder app. This tool can now provide users with succinct summaries of their recordings in bullet points, even without internet connectivity. Additionally, the Gboard app is gaining a smart reply function, offering predictive text responses that are both swift and secure.

The AI Core is not exclusively tied to Google's hardware; it also complements and utilizes the machine learning engines of other tech giants such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung. This opens up possibilities for developers to create tailored AI features for various applications.

Enhancements Beyond AI

Beyond these AI improvements, the December update for the Pixel 8 Pro brings further enhancements such as the ability for the Photo Unblur feature to better recognize pets, along with new document cleaning capabilities for scanned items. The Google Pixel Fold is now privy to a Dual Screen Preview mode, and more convenience is rolling out for Pixel phone users in conjunction with the Pixel Watch. Additionally, a new Repair Mode feature is introduced for Pixel smartphones to enhance security while servicing.

Integration with the Pixel Watch has been improved as well, allowing for features such as unlocking Pixel phones and syncing Do Not Disturb modes. This demonstrates a growing ecosystem synergy akin to the relationship between the iPhone and the Apple Watch.
