AMD Unveils Next-Gen Radeon RX 9070-Series GPUs with AI-Powered FSR 4 Upscaling

Published January 6, 2025

AMD has recently introduced its upcoming Radeon RX 9070-series GPUs at CES. These graphics cards are designed based on the latest RDNA 4 architecture and come with support for AI-enhanced FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling technology.

The new Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 are set to be launched in the first quarter of the year. However, AMD has not yet disclosed specifics regarding their specifications, pricing, or exact release dates.

Details on the New Technology

While AMD's announcement was limited in details, they emphasized that the RDNA 4 architecture has been built from the ground up, featuring a notable increase in AI capabilities. The new GPU architecture incorporates optimized compute units, enhancements in ray tracing performance, and improved media encoding quality. Built on a 4nm manufacturing process, the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 will boast AMD's second-generation AI accelerators, third-generation ray tracing accelerators, and a second-generation radiance display engine.

Introducing FSR 4 Upscaling

With these advancements, AMD is also launching FSR 4 exclusively for the 9000-series GPUs. This new version of FidelityFX Super Resolution utilizes machine learning to upscale and generate frames, and it has been crafted specifically for the features of the RDNA 4 architecture and its dedicated AI hardware. Currently, FSR 4 will only be available with the Radeon RX 9070-series graphics cards, and it will work in conjunction with games that already incorporate FSR 3.1.

During AMD’s keynote address, Matt Booty, President of Game Content and Studios at Microsoft, confirmed that FSR 4 will be featured in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which is set to be released later this year.

Performance Expectations and Future Details

AMD has not provided insights on how FSR 4 will stack up against Nvidia's DLSS technology or what kind of performance boosts and visual quality improvements users can expect. While the exact performance metrics of the RX 9070 series against its competitors remain unclear, AMD indicated in its branding materials that the performance level may be comparable to Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Super. Notably, Nvidia is expected to unveil its RTX 50-series GPUs shortly.

New Software Features

In addition to the new GPUs, AMD is enhancing its Adrenalin software by integrating AI-powered features. These updates will allow users to generate images using AI models, summarize local documents quickly, and even interact with an AI chatbot to inquire about graphics settings and more.

If you're wondering about AMD's jump from the Radeon 7000 series directly to the 9000 series, the company has clarified that the 8000-series branding will be designated for RDNA 3.5 mobile GPUs. AMD is currently previewing FSR 4 at CES, promising to reveal more details on both the upscaling technology and the latest RDNA 4 GPUs before their launch in the first quarter.
