ChatGPT's Desktop App Launches on Windows with Missing Features

Published October 18, 2024

Despite Microsoft's significant investment in OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, the desktop app for the AI chatbot initially launched on macOS back in May of this year. This decision left many Windows users eagerly awaiting their turn.

Now, Windows users can rejoice as the ChatGPT desktop app is finally available for download. However, there is an important note: this is only an "early version" intended for paid subscribers who are enrolled in the ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, or Edu plans.

After downloading and installing the app, users can easily initiate a new conversation by pressing the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut. The desktop application provides access to OpenAI's latest AI models, allowing users to engage in various tasks such as asking questions, analyzing images, and uploading files.

Nonetheless, it's important to be aware that some features currently accessible in the macOS version and the web version of ChatGPT are not available in the Windows app yet. According to OpenAI's support page, the company aims to roll out these missing features in the full release of the Windows application.

Some of the features still to come include Standard and Advanced Voice options, Context Connectors for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, and third-party authentication within the GPT Builder.

For users enamored with advanced interactions and capabilities of ChatGPT, the inclusion of these features in future updates is something to look forward to.

Stay tuned for further enhancements as OpenAI continues to develop its offerings to cater to the growing user base.
