AI Robots Set to Enhance English Learning in Seoul Schools

Published November 29, 2023

Starting in March 2024, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has announced an innovative step forward for language learning: artificial intelligence robots will be introduced to five elementary and middle schools in Seoul to support English education. These AI-powered English tutoring robots are designed to assist students with their English language skills, focusing on vocabulary, conversation practice, and correct pronunciation.

Personalized Learning Support

The robots are not just teaching aides; they are sophisticated tools that offer personalized learning experiences. Students who are falling behind or struggling with traditional teaching methods will benefit from tailored educational services provided by these robots, allowing them to advance in English at a speed that suits them.

Chatbot App for Practice

In addition to the robots, a chatbot app will be made available to students, facilitating conversation practice on mobile devices. This app encourages students to engage with the robot in discussions on various topics, enhancing their conversational abilities even further.

Trial Phase and Future Expansion

The program is currently in a trial phase, which will be carefully evaluated by the education office through feedback and results before deciding on its full implementation. Success in the initial trial could lead to the introduction of more AI robots in additional schools across Seoul.

Comprehensive English Education Strategy

Seoul's Superintendent of Education, Cho Hee-yeon, emphasized the drive for upgrading public English education. Plans are underway to require each elementary school in Seoul to employ at least one native English-speaking teacher, with larger schools hiring two. There's also an initiative to leverage international school partnerships for global student interactions.

Expanding Student Horizons

Through 'international joint classes', Korean students are connecting with counterparts from 18 countries worldwide. This student exchange program utilizes translation technology and has enabled participants to engage in coding and webpage creation. It aims to expand students' global perspectives and cultural understanding.

Support for Multicultural Families

To address the increasing diversity in Seoul, the education office is also intensifying efforts to provide Korean language education for children from multicultural families, preparing them for a more inclusive society.
