Exploring the Dual Nature of AI Robots in 'Companion'

Published February 1, 2025

In the sci-fi thriller Companion, the story revolves around the intriguing journey of an AI robot companion named Iris, played by Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets. Iris is designed to be the perfect girlfriend for Josh, portrayed by Jack Quaid, famous for his role in The Boys. However, during a holiday weekend with friends, Iris unexpectedly glitches, leading to unforeseen consequences.

The film's cast, including Harvey Guillén from What We Do in the Shadows, Lukas Gage from Smile 2, and Megan Suri from It Lives Inside, shared their insights on the potential future where AI companions like Iris could seamlessly integrate into our lives. Both Guillén and Suri noted that such robots are not just a concept in movies; prototypes existing today, like the Tesla Bot, showcase how close society is to this reality.

Megan Suri, whose character Kat expresses skepticism about AI, shared her reservations even before Iris begins to exhibit glitches. This skepticism among friends highlights a crucial theme in the movie—can we trust AI, especially when they start to break free from their programming?

The cast discussed the thrilling and terrifying implications of AI companionship. Lukas Gage expressed his fears about what could happen if cute robots from theme parks were released into the public. Suri added that while the idea is exciting, it raises valid concerns, saying, "It’s scary and it’s terrifying." Guillén chimed in, noting the duality of excitement and fear often associated with advanced robotics.

They also reflected on the reality of robots as they exist at theme parks, such as the friendly droids from the Star Wars universe at Galaxy’s Edge. The actors were especially keen on the idea of Guillén’s beloved Perrito from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish being reimagined as a robot dog in a theme park, emphasizing that not all AI has to be frightening.

Companion is currently in theaters, inviting audiences to ponder the future of AI and its potential to balance both cuteness and eeriness.
