Meta Platforms Discontinues Responsible AI Team, Refocuses on Generative AI Division

Published November 20, 2023

Meta Platforms, Inc., widely recognized for its social media and technology innovations, has recently made the strategic decision to disband its Responsible AI (RAI) team. This division was primarily focused on overseeing and ensuring the safety and ethics of the company's AI initiatives.

Strategic Reassignment

The dissolution of the RAI team has led to personnel changes within Meta. A majority of the former RAI team members have been reassigned to the Generative AI product division, which is responsible for developing new and innovative AI-driven features. The remaining members have found their new roles within the AI Infrastructure team. This move indicates a realignment of priorities towards Generative AI, emphasizing its importance to Meta's future road map.

Emphasis on AI Development

In recent months, Meta has rolled out a number of AI-powered features such as personalized sticker creation, image editing capabilities, and a suite of chatbot personalities mimicking celebrities. These advancements, powered by generative AI, have become a part of the company's service offerings. Following the surge in popularity of ChatGPT from OpenAI, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shifted some focus from the metaverse to concentrate more on the potential of AI, as reflected in discussions during earnings calls and the annual developer conference.

The Call for Regulation in AI

As AI technology advances rapidly, tech giants such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Microsoft Corp have been vocal about the need for industry-specific AI regulations and a collective approach to governing AI systems. This comes amidst a growing public and corporate awareness of the profound impact AI can have on society.

Despite the changes within Meta's internal teams, the company's shares observed a slight uptick in premarket trading, indicating investor confidence or neutrality concerning the recent strategic decision.
