Indian Government Greenlights ₹10,372 Crore for National AI Mission
The Indian Union Cabinet has sanctioned a substantial investment amounting to ₹10,372 crore to foster advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) across the nation. This strategic initiative, known as the IndiaAI mission, is designed to promote a robust ecosystem that will drive AI innovation and collaboration, bridging the gap between public institutions and private enterprises.
Creating Opportunities and Advancing Innovation
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal conveyed that this mission aims to democratize access to computing, enhance the quality of data, strengthen indigenous AI development, attract elite AI specialists, and stimulate industry cooperatives. He also highlighted the mission's objective to provide capital for startups and support AI projects that yield societal benefits while adhering to ethical standards, thus ensuring a responsible and inclusive expansion of India’s AI landscape.
Building a High-End AI Computing Ecosystem
As a cornerstone of this initiative, an advanced AI computing ecosystem backed by over 10,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) will be constructed through public-private partnerships. This ecosystem aims to meet the growing requirements of burgeoning AI startups and research bodies in India.
An AI Marketplace to Elevate AI Services
The establishment of an AI marketplace is also envisaged to serve as a pivotal AI resource hub, providing pre-trained AI models and a range of services tailored to the needs of AI innovators. Such a platform would streamline the development process for AI solutions and act as a comprehensive hub for necessary resources.
In addition to fostering innovation and developing domestic proficiencies, the mission is expected to create manifold skilled job opportunities and leverage the country's demographic dividend. This strategic move intends to reinforce India’s technological sovereignty and global competitiveness in the AI sector.
Contribution to Critical Sectors and Education
The mission includes the IndiaAI Innovation Centre, which will focus on formulating and deploying indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and foundational models for critical sectors. An IndiaAI Datasets Platform will also be developed to provide streamlined access to significant non-personal datasets, bolstering AI innovation.
An initiative to support the development of AI applications in crucial areas is in the works, aiming to address challenges identified by different government departments and agencies. The endeavor also emphasises expanding AI education on various levels and setting up labs in lesser-developed cities to cultivate essential skills.
Ensuring Safe and Responsible AI Deployment
The mission also dedicates attention to the safe and responsible implementation of AI by establishing the Safe and Trusted AI pillar. This component will support responsible AI projects, including indigenous tool development, self-assessment for innovators, and robust governance frameworks.
Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, asserts that this programme will be instrumental in augmenting India's position in the global AI landscape, emphasizing the nation's potential to influence the future of AI both domestically and internationally.
