Samsung Unveils Galaxy S25 Phones with Powerful AI Features
Samsung has introduced its latest Galaxy S25 series, which consists of three flagship phones: the Galaxy S25, the Galaxy S25 Plus, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra. These new models are designed with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features and very minimal design changes compared to their predecessors.
The launch event took place at the Wits Anglo-American Digital Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa. This unveiling comes just before upcoming releases by competitors such as Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei, which are also expected to highlight AI capabilities in their devices.
AI-Powered Functionality
The Galaxy S25 series operates on One UI 7, built on top of Android 15. Samsung claims that this combination transforms the phones into a true AI companion. This new software enables the devices to comprehend text, speech, images, and videos, facilitating natural language interactions between the user and the phone.
Users can perform tasks such as locating a photo or video by simply describing its content. They can also change phone settings through voice commands rather than navigating through menus. Another interesting feature is the Now Brief, which provides users with alerts throughout the day based on their routine and activities. Notifications via this feature will be displayed in the Now Bar, a new notification system on the devices.
Unique AI Features
One standout AI feature demonstrated at the launch was the audio eraser, which enhances audio recording clarity in noisy environments. Samsung explained that the Galaxy S25 can analyze sound specific to recorded videos, allowing users to minimize unwanted background noise.
Another useful addition is the Cooking Master feature. According to Samsung South Africa's Zaheer Cajee, users can take a picture of their refrigerator's contents, after which the device will suggest recipes based on the available ingredients and provide meal preparation times.
A Human-Like Interaction
Justin Hume, Samsung's Vice President for Mobile, emphasized the company's aim to make AI interactions more human-like. He stated that users would be able to converse with the Galaxy S25 as if it were a friend, performing various tasks seamlessly. The S25 series will also feature Google's Gemini AI built directly into the device.
While AI technology is becoming increasingly popular, Samsung's TM Roh highlighted the focus on personalization in AI. This ensures that interactions with the device feel tailored to each user.
Integration of Google Gemini
During the launch, Google showcased the evolving Android smartphone experience centered around AI. One exciting capability is Gemini Live, allowing users to engage in natural, conversational exchanges with the AI for brainstorming or simplifying complex subjects. Future updates are expected to enhance this interactivity further by integrating images, files, and YouTube videos into conversations.
Upcoming features like Project Astra will introduce capabilities like screen sharing and live video streaming to Gemini, making it even more versatile.
Hardware Enhancements
The Galaxy S25 series also comes with significant hardware improvements, including a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor specifically tailored for these models. The Galaxy S25 Ultra particularly stands out with its redesigned appearance, featuring the largest display on a non-foldable Samsung phone and enhancements to its ultrawide camera. Interestingly, the S Pen stylus included with the Ultra model has not received any updates.
Pricing and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is currently available for pre-order, with full availability set for February 7, 2025. Pricing starts at R19,999 for the standard S25, R24,499 for the S25 Plus, and R31,999 for the S25 Ultra. The Ultra model can be purchased in colors such as Titanium Black, Titanium Blue, Titanium Grey, and Titanium Silver.
